A Sky Full of Stars by Dani Atkins

Thank you to the team at Head of Zeus for the invitation to join the blog tour for this emotional book. Today (5th August 2021) is paperback publication day and I’m pleased to be sharing my five star review on the first day of the blog tour.

He’d have done everything differently if he’d known she’d be gone so soon…

When Lisa married Alex, she gave his life meaning. She was a professional astronomer: a stargazer. And when she gazed at Alex, she saw that behind his tough exterior was a man she could love.

Alex, Lisa and their young son Connor made a happy little universe. But when Lisa dies suddenly, their universe is destroyed. Alex is shattered by loss, and overwhelmed by the difficulties of being a single father to a six-year-old boy.

Then Alex meets four strangers. Two men and two women, who never met Lisa, but whose lives changed profoundly because she died. As Alex hears their stories, he begins to realise the world may not be as cruel and senseless as it seems. Perhaps, after all, the future is written in the stars…

My thoughts:

If you are looking for an emotional read, then this is the perfect book for you. The story starts with Lisa heading off to an Astronomy Fair, waving goodbye to Alex and Connor. The events of that day meant that Lisa never returned to her beautiful family and I was weeping after only a few chapters. We witnessed Alex’s bewilderment and grief as the hospital doctor delivered the news.

As the synopsis states, Lisa’s death changed the life of four strangers – Molly, Mac, Barbara and Jamie. As they started to communicate with Alex, will this help or hinder the grieving process for Alex and Connor?

This book is beautifully written by Dani Atkins. Thankfully I don’t have personal experience of losing a loved one in an accident, but after reading this book, I felt as if I had been part of the family experiencing the loss and dealing with how to move forwards. As a mum, Connor’s story broke my heart. He loved his mum and struggled to accept that she has gone.

The book isn’t just dealing with loss but also dealing with the gifts that Lisa made after her death. There is happiness, new beginnings and feeling guilty for the group of four brought together by Lisa and Alex. They all have stories that are just beginning.

A beautiful and emotional read, I wish I could give more than just 5 stars for A Sky Full of Stars. I implore you to read this story (and to have a box (or two) of tissues handy when you read it.
