Two broken hearts.

Since she inherited The Starfish Café, Hollie has poured her heart into the business, striving to keep her mother’s traditions and warm-hearted spirit alive. But behind closed doors Hollie is searching for true happiness, as she grieves the tragic loss of her family who were once the beating heart of the café…

An unexpected meeting.

Jake lives by two rules: don’t let anyone get close and don’t talk about what happened. Little does he know that a chance meeting at The Starfish Café, facilitated by a fluffy lost dog, is about to turn his world upside down…

The chance to love again.

Can Hollie and Jake break down the barriers that have been holding them back from finding love and happiness, before Christmas comes around? After all, with courage, nothing is impossible…

My thoughts:

It was lovely to return to Whitsborough Bay with Jessica Redland this weekend, to find out more about the lives of the local residents. This is a book about how two young people have to keep moving forward, after tragic events in their past.

Hollie, born on Christmas Eve, always loved the Christmas period. Sadly, in more recent years, Hollie has found Christmas time painful, after deaths and loss, at what should be a time of celebration.

Jake, who has also suffered tragic loss and the appalling behaviour of his older sister, is facing up to his past when he makes a surprise discovery of a lost dog. Mr Pickles.

Mr Pickles brings the two young people together, both of whom are in need of someone who understands how difficult it is to be seen as a person, rather than to be pitied and defined by their losses.

Despite there being much understanding for each other, could something stop them from being together? Jessica Redland has created a very emotional story about two young people who have been through so much but who continue caring for others in and out of work.

This story is also a tribute to the excellent work of the RNLI, a fabulous group of volunteers, who rescue people in danger in the sea around the UK. I enjoyed reading this book, so I’m happy to recommend it to readers of my review (I also recommend having a box of tissues nearby).
