The Devil’s Advocate by Steve Cavanagh

Thank you to Orion Publishing and the Tandem Collective for the opportunity to join The Devil’s Advocate Readalong for the latest paperback publication of an Eddie Flynn story by Steve Cavanagh.

Synopsis:

HE’S WON EVERY TRIAL. BECAUSE HE’S BEHIND EVERY MURDER.

Ambitious District Attorney Randal Korn lives to watch prisoners executed.
Even if they are not guilty.

An innocent man, Andy Dubois, faces the death penalty for the murder of young girl. Korn has already fixed things to make sure he wins a fast conviction.

The one thing Korn didn’t count on was Eddie Flynn.

Slick, street smart and cunning, the former con artist turned New York lawyer has only seven days to save an innocent man against a corrupt system and find the real killer.

In a week the Judge will read the verdict, but will Eddie be alive to hear it?

My thoughts:

I first discovered the Eddie Flynn series when I read and enjoyed Fifty Fifty last year. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to catch up with Eddie, Kate, Harry and Bloch again In The Devil’s Advocate.

This book is set after Fifty Fifty – Eddie and Kate are now partners in their law firm, assisted by Harry and Bloch. An unexpected visitor leads to Eddie and Harry leaving New York behind to provide legal support for Andy Dubois in Alabama, after his lawyer Cody Warren suddenly disappeared a week before the murder trial.

Eddie and Harry receive an unpleasant welcome when they arrive, and find that not only are they trying to save Andy from the Yellow Mama chair, but that they need to protect themselves from a corrupt legal system.

Randal Korn, the local District Attorney, is after a conviction and the murder penalty, and he doesn’t care how he achieves it. We know from the start of the story that he is addicted to watching prisoners die in the death chamber, and as the story unfolds we find out more about how he has rigged the local law enforcement system.

This is a fast paced book and the pages flew by. The tension quickly built as the body count rose. On a number of occasions I found myself holding my breath, as Eddie and his team found themselves in life threatening situations. Whether you’ve read an Eddie Flynn book before or you are new to this series, I implore you to pick up a copy of this book, switch off your phone, ignore your family and get lost in the story.

In other news, I’m thrilled to see that FBI agent Paige Delaney from THIRTEEN will be in the next Steve Cavanagh book, THE ACCOMPLICE, later this year.

My Tandem Collective readalong pack with Flynn and Brooks mug, pen and notebook.
