A Moment on the Lips by J Taylor

Thank you to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for the invitation to join the blog tour, and to J Taylor for a copy of the book (and some Lindt chocolate). My thoughts are my own and not influenced by the chocolate.

From debut and self published author, J Taylor, comes a hilarious, heartfelt story about friendship, self-acceptance and discovering how on earth one goes about losing an awful lot of weight…

Etta Wilson has vowed to make a change. At five foot three and a size twenty, she’s had enough. Honestly, this has absolutely nothing to do with seeing her ex, Robert Ward, strolling around town, smitten with a new slim girlfriend.

So, Etta’s chucked the calorific cakes, thrown the takeaway in the bin and committed to cardio. She’s got nothing to lose – well apart from a lot of weight – but how hard can that be?

Nearly impossible, it turns out. Etta soon realises she can’t do this alone. Thanks to her colleagues at the Elm Lodge Care Home, she won’t have to. With their help, will Etta reach her goals? Or does a moment on the lips really mean a lifetime on the hips?

My thoughts:

When Anne’s email about the blog tour arrived describing this as heartfelt and hilarious, it was ‘just what the doctor ordered’ on a dark cold winter day.

Etta is a character I instantly warmed to, life hasn’t been easy for her and she has reached a stage in her life where she needs to make changes, for her physical and mental health. Thankfully some of her colleagues need to make changes too, and I loved how their friendships evolved, despite their different ages and backgrounds. I’ve spent the past 5 minutes wondering who my favourite main character was, but can’t pick just one.

Although the friendships develop as they embark on a weight loss journey, this book is much more than a book about a group of women dieting. This is a celebration of how women can look out for each other, give support, a shoulder to cry on and cheer each other on from the sidelines.

I loved the humour in this uplifting book and I’m happy to recommend it. I’m also looking forward to reading the sequel, A Moment on the Lips at Christmas, due to be published in September 2022, to see what happens next for Etta, Yana, Nicky, Jenna and Val
