Thank you to Zaffre Books for a copy of this gorgeous hardback book by Anton Du Beke, the fourth book in the Buckingham Hotel series. I shared my review for book three, A Christmas to Remember, last week and you can read it here: https://mentoringmumof2bookreviews.home.blog/2022/03/11/a-christmas-to-remember-by-anton-du-beke-2/ I’m sharing a mini review today.
‘Downton with dance, perfect’ Santa Montefiore
As war is declared once more, a shadow falls over Britain. The staff at the luxurious Buckingham hotel must do all that they can to keep their important guests happy, but behind the scenes they are scared. Away from the glitz and the glamour of the ballroom they must face this new reality.
Newlywed Nancy knows that her brave husband, debonair dancer Raymond de Guise will want to fight for his country and enlist. She loves and supports him but is heartbroken at the thought of them being apart, and the dangers he will face.
With a new hotel manager at the helm, no one knows what the future holds but as fashionable society retreats from London and staff depart to sign up for service, one thing is for certain; life at the Buckingham will never be the same again . . .
Having enjoyed reading book three, and then book two, Moonlight over Mayfair, I was thrilled to be returning to the Buckingham Hotel in 1939, to find out what happened next to Nancy, Raymond, their friends and family.
The book starts after the evacuation of Dunkirk, and we have an inkling that tragedy may have struck. We then travel back further in time to see what happened to the staff of the hotel after war was declared.
As you would expect, some staff joined up, some staff left to help the war effort in other ways and some were refused due to ill health. This story becomes an emotional roller coaster as we wait for news from mainland Europe.
There are many changes in London, including in the ballroom, but the spirit of the Buckingham Hotel continues and I’m happy to recommend this book. I’m looking forward to returning to the Buckingham Hotel again later this year, when book five, The Ballroom Blitz, is published.
