Lifesaving for Beginners by Josie Lloyd

In life’s stormy waters, it’s your friends who keep you afloat…

Maddy Wolfe’s life has just capsized. After her twenty-year marriage suddenly implodes, she heads to Brighton to search for her estranged son, Jamie. But he’s nowhere to be found and for the first time, she’s totally alone. That is, until she meets the Salty Sea-Gals, a group of feisty sea-swimmers.

Seventy-two-year old Helga is determined not to slow down, while thirty-something Tor is still figuring out who she is. Bereaved Dominica is trying to find a reason to carry on, and busy mum Claire is learning to put herself first for a change.

As their regular cold-water plunges become a lifeline for them all, Maddy starts to realise that these brave women might just help her find both Jamie and herself. Together, they’ll turn the tide.

My thoughts:

Thank you HQStories for your invitation to join the blog tour for Lifesaving for Beginners by Josie Lloyd. I enjoyed reading The Cancer Ladies Running Club by Josie last year and you can read my review here : https://mentoringmumof2bookreviews.home.blog/2021/05/12/bookreview-the-cancer-ladies-running-club-by-josie-lloyd/

This book is one of my favourite books of the year. A group of women, of different ages and stages in their life, form a sea-swimmers group, the Salty Sea-Gals. Each member of the group are dealing with life issues from losing a husband to Covid to not knowing how to tell their family about their new partner to finding out their husband is having an affair with their friend.

The story flows beautifully, as the women put their worries to one side during their cold water swims. The book starts on Christmas Day and I must admit that I felt a chill go through me, trying to imagine myself in the sea in Brighton at that time of year. However, as the story moves forward to the warmer summer months, I stopped wondering why people did this and started to wonder why I didn’t – Josie Lloyd’s writing is very persuasive.

I loved how the Salty Sea-Gals gave each other support to build confidence, to try new experiences and to run community projects. I want to tell you more about each of the fabulous main characters but Josie Lloyd does that beautifully in the book, so I implore you to buy or borrow a copy (did you know that an author receives a payment every time you borrow a book from a library), and meet the Salty Sea-Gals.

Another excellent book by Josie Lloyd that I’m happy to recommend. Full of warmth, friendship, community spirit and determination to move forward.
