The Last List of Mabel Beaumont by Laura Pearson

The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…

Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.

But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.

Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.

It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.

What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…

A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of My Name is Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

My thoughts:

Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to join the blog tour for The Last List of Mabel Beaumont by Laura Pearson. I’ve enjoyed reading previous books by Laura and you can read one of my reviews here: https://mentoringmumof2bookreviews.home.blog/2019/10/03/i-wanted-you-to-know-by-laura-pearson-the-must-read-book-of-2019/

When I read I Wanted You To Know by Laura back in 2019, I needed a box of tissues to mop up my tears after reading the emotional story. So when I curled up with my digital review copy of this new book, I made sure I had some tissues nearby.

I can confirm that this is another emotional book. Initially we experience sadness as Mabel finds herself alone. I loved how Arthur had made provision for someone to help Mabel in the event of his death (first tears).

As the story continues, Mabel finds herself meeting new people and making new connections. Mabel finds herself trying to solve other people’s problems – although some of her methods are rather questionable. But can she find her oldest friend?

This is another beautifully written book by Laura. I didn’t need as many tissues for this book but this was a more uplifting read. Mabel is definitely one of my favourite characters of 2023 and I’m keen to recommend the book to readers of my book blog.
